Biography:

Dr. Gebreyes' expertise lies in the area of global health and Infectious Diseases Molecular Epidemiology. His team and collaborators conduct research on globally important foodborne and nosocomial pathogens including Salmonella, Staphylococci and Clostridium difficile on public health significant issues mainly antimicrobial resistance. His laboratory, IDMEL, is equipped with state-of-the-art DNA fingerprinting and sequencing and provides professional service to various collaborators globally. Dr. Gebreyes teaches molecular epidemiology courses internationally including Ohio, Minnesota, North Carolina, Brazil, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Tanzania. Dr. Gebreyes provides professional consultation to various global partners including the Austrian government Competence Centers for Excellent Technologies (COMET), Royal Saudi Arabain National Center for Science and Technology; Medical Research Council of the UK and RSA; NIH, USDA, ICGEB and others. Dr. Gebreyes and his collaborators established the VPH-Biotech Global Consortium, a capacity building consortium in the area of veterinary public health and biotechnology in three regions: Latin America, eastern Africa and Asia-Pacific, mainly Thailand. As part of this capacity building initiative, Dr. Gebreyes chaired the 1st Int'l Congress on Pathogens at the Human Animal Interface, ICOPHAI.
