Biography:

Dr. Kone is professor of medicine in the division of renal diseases and hypertension at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. His research focuses on the epigenetic control or renal sodium transport. He received his undergraduate education at Princeton University, and his M.D. degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and his nephrology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kone held faculty positions at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the University of Florida College of Medicine, before joining the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1995. He was director of the division of renal diseases and hypertension, executive vice chairman and then chairman of the department of internal medicine, and the inaugural holder of the James T. and Nancy B. Willerson Chair at that institution. He then served as the Folke H. Peterson/Dean’s Distinguished Professor and eighth Dean of the University of Florida College of Medicine. He returned to UT-Houston in 2009. He has held leadership positions in multiple professional organizations, and currently serves as an associate editor of Clinical and Translational Science, and a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Medicine. He has been principal investigator of a GCRC, an NIH training grant, and his own research program, which has been continuously funded by the NIH for 25 years. He is one of the 9 UT-Health faculty members who have been elected as Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences for their research contributions. He has been a perennial selection to Best Doctors in America, and has received numerous teaching awards.
